Chapter Fifteen

“I saw the light on,” Howard smiled at Monica as he stuck his stunning face inside her office door.

“Yes, working late again,” she confessed.

“You better get home to that man,” he warned her.

“Somebody’s gotta make the money,” she joked.

“That’s why so many Black women are alone,” he teased her.

“A real man can deal with a career woman,” Monica would not back down.

“Touché,” Howard conceded.

“I’m actually glad you are here. I want to show you something.”

“Hold on. I don’t mess with married women,” Howard joked.

“I’m serious, Howie. Come look at this”. Monica directed Howard to her computer screen.

“Did you just call me Howie?” He asked as he walked towards her desk.

“This is what I’ve been working on,” she told him.

“I’ve never seen this campaign before. Is it new?”

“You haven’t seen it because it’s my own, personal work. I am thinking about leaving the company and starting my own project. I believe this is going to be huge.”

“I looks like it could be very successful,” he encouraged her.

“I just need someone logistical to help me. I’m the creative one. I need someone to keep me grounded in reality,” she leaned back in her leather chair and looked up at him, smiling.

“Oh, no. I know how this story ends. We work together late, night after night. Then one day when we finish the project, we make mad, passionate love on your desk and I end up with a stapler in my ass.”

“In your ass? That’s so gay.”

Howard laughed. “You know what I’m talking about.”

“I do know what you’re talking about. And, while that does sound like fun, sans the stapler, I have bigger dreams for us than incredible sex on this mahogany desk.”

“Dreams for us? Mon, slow your roll. You have someone to dream with.”

“Howie, I meant professional dreams. I know you don’t fool around with married women and I am not trying to get you caught up. This is bigger than our carnal desires. We can change the world with this concept. We could be millionaires, not just thousandaires,” she tried to convince him.

“I don’t know, Mon. It does look promising. I have never seen anything like it.”

“Then ride with your girl, Howie. Let’s change the world together.”

“I need to think about it, girl.”

“Take your time, Howie. I will be right here waiting for you.”

“Go home to your man, girl.”

Monica dropped her head. Howard walked out of her office.
